Momentum Mavericks - A learn-to-ski program for 6 - 11-year-olds

Our Mavericks program is designed for kids aged 6 to 11 to progress in the sport of Nordic skiing, and is all about FUN! We want to provide a cross-country skiing opportunity for young people on Snoqualmie Pass to play in our winter wonderland.  Mavericks skiers can range from beginners on skis to quickly advancing young racers; we tailor our sessions to accommodate all abilities, to ensure that every young skier is challenged in a way that helps them progress without feeling either held back or left behind.

The Mavericks program meets 6 Saturdays (in 2024, those dates will be 1/6, 1/20, 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, and 2/24 with a possible make up in March) for a fun-filled 2-hr practice. Sessions take place at Cabin Creek (exit 63) on Snoqualmie Pass and start at 9 am. We recommend that you give yourself plenty and try to arrive by 8:15 because the parking lot can fill.

We encourage Mavericks skiers at all levels to try out racing by checking out the Washington Nordic Cup races (Washington Nordic Cup (wncup.org))  Check out the race schedule now and consider coming out to join the Momentum NW community in a race or two!

What a Mavericks Day looks like

Saturdays 9am - 11am: Meet your coach at the Cabin Creek Trails (exit 63 on I-90). We keep each group small and sorted into similar ability ranges so coaches each have 5 athletes apiece; our coaches have undergone club-led training to be the best ski mentors possible!

For the next two hours your skier will gain comfort on their skis while making new friends, learning new skills and challenging themselves with the support of their coaches. Each coach comes with a vast repertoire of activities sure to keep the group going all the way to the end.

While Mavericks sessions in the past have ended with hot cocoa, we may not be able to provide warm drinks in compliance with COVID-19 guidance. There is always a chance for the snow fort construction and ski jumping contest to make sure everyone smiles before heading home.

2023-2024 PROGRAM PRICING DETAILS:

For the 2023-2024 season, we have adopted a tiered pricing system. To find your suggested fee, divide your total monthly household income (pre-tax) by the number of members in your household, then find your tier in the table below.

For example - The household income for K's family of four (K, partner, two children) is $9600. Divide the household's $9600 monthly income by the four household members -- $9600 ÷ 4 = $2400. Looking at the chart below we see that K's suggested tier is C.  When K registers themselves or their children for an event they will choose Tier C.

Tier A: $0 | $1,000 income or less per household member each month

Tier B: $175 | $1,000-$2,000 per household member each month

Tier C: $300 | $2,000-3,000 per household member each month

Tier D: $375 | $3,000-4,000 per household member each month

Tier E: $450 | $4,000+ per household member each month

This tiered pricing system was originally implemented by DiscNW Community Supported Ultimate.

We will contact you if you are participating in Mavericks and your skier is not on the Momentum Northwest (club) roster. The USSS General Membership is $30. Cancellation Policy

Our Mavericks program is designed to progress the interest and skills of young cross-country ski racers in a fun and safe environment. To ensure the happiness and safety of our participants and their families, there are situations when scheduled Mavericks sessions may be delayed or cancelled. The Mavericks schedule each winter will be built with pre-identified make-up days (at least one, but ideally two) so parents and coaches can keep these days in reserve from the start of the season.

Situations where Mavericks may be delayed or cancelled can include:

  • I-90 is closed by WSDOT, including weather or other blocking incidents

  • Lack of snow

  • Extreme weather conditions

Delay or cancellation of Mavericks will consider projected roadway opening times, weather forecasts and other factors. If Mavericks will be delayed or cancelled, coaches will attempt to email participants before 7am on the morning of Mavericks. Please note, there are situations where remote communications may be impacted and it may not be possible to send a prompt message.

A delay in Mavericks would likely push back the start by 30-60 minutes and would attempt to align with roadway openings or weather changes. If a delay of 2 hours is necessary, Mavericks would likely be cancelled for that day.

If Mavericks is cancelled, a make-up session will be confirmed, if possible. Make-up sessions may include additional Mavericks sessions or extending other scheduled Mavericks sessions.

Refund Policy

Refunds are only available if the participant has an injury or medical condition preventing participation. A letter from the doctor will be needed explaining the injury or condition. You will be refunded for the cost of tuition for the remaining sessions minus a $40 administrative fee. While this may seem stringent, the Mavericks program often has a wait list and program administration is handled by volunteers.
